In the fall of 2017, Goucher will be launching men’s and women’s golf teams. These will be the first golf teams in the history of the school’s athletics department.
Hunter Brown, the women’s golf coach, has been recruiting prospective students for both teams since September. Every student recruited thus far has been an incoming freshman who has committed to Goucher. He hopes to recruit more students, especially for the women’s team.
The men’s team has five students signed up, whereas the women’s team has two. A minimum of four students is needed to create a team, to play in tournaments, under NCAA standards.
Similar to the swim team at Goucher, the golf teams will train together and will be coached by Brown until a men’s coach is hired. Players will train twenty hours a week in order to meet NCAA standards. Golf will happen both semesters, instead of being offered in either fall or spring.
Goucher’s home course will be at the Hillendale Country Club in Phoenix, MD. The course was established in 1923 and has had a long history of dedication from its members. The course is an estimated fifteen-minute drive from Goucher’s campus.
Students planning on playing on either golf team should be aware that transportation will not be provided to and from the golf course.
Tournaments will be made up of students anywhere in the region, which includes schools from Pennsylvania.
“It has been super exciting to be here. I think that it is going to be really cool to establish this and get the kids on campus. I can’t wait to see where everything goes,” stated Brown.
If students are interested or want to find out more about becoming a part of either team they should message Brown at hunter.brown.@goucher.edu.
