Goucher Men’s Lacrosse have struggled to win games within their conference in the past few years. Especially against the University of Scranton Royals.
Since April 30, 2014, the Gophers had not beaten the Royals. The team’s senior class had yet to feel the triumph of beating a Landmark Conference Playoff team. That drought would come to an end on Saturday, March 24, 2018.
The Gophers jumped out to a 2-1 lead over Scranton with goals from Derek Bitzer and Grant LaSorda respectively, but the Royals were quick to tie the game back up as the first quarter ended all knotted up at 2-2. The teams traded a pair of goals shortly into the second quarter with Grant Lasorda’s second goal of the game and Mason Gorman adding his first, making the score 4-4. Then Goucher began surging at the end of a half, claiming a 7-5 lead with goals from Zephan Harnish, Andrew Sade, and Mason Gorman’s second of the day.
Coming out of halftime, Derek Bitzer scored his second goal of the day, followed by a goal from Pierce Bailey, and then a goal from Andrew Sade, his second of the day. This made the score 10-5 with about half of the third quarter to go. Scranton would tally one goal but the Gopher’s answered quickly with a second goal from Zephan Harnish, ending the third quarter at a score of 11-6. Scranton would score four in the fourth, but in the midst of those goals, Mason Gorman scored, getting a hat trick to solidify the result and cutting short a daring comeback from the Royals.
The Goucher Gophers would win the game 12-10 and get their first win against Scranton in 4 years. This win puts Goucher at a 6-4 record on the season and 1-0 record in the Landmark Conference. The Gophers next game is Saturday, March 31, 2018 at Elizabethtown College.
