On Wednesday, April 18, the Catholic University of America Cardinals came to Beldon Field looking to extend their winning streak against Goucher to 4 games straight. But they would not make that happen
Goucher Men’s lacrosse took on Catholic at 4:00 and started off strong with a goal from Zephan Harnish just about one minute into the game, followed by a goal from Grant LaSorda three minutes into the game. Catholic found the net shortly after to make the game 2-1 in favor of the Gophers. Goucher then extended their lead to 4-1 into halftime with goals from Harnish (2) and Mason Gorman.
The Cardinals would score the lone goal in the third quarter to bring the score within two. Catholic would then cut the lead to one just three minutes into the fourth quarter. With about 2:25 left in the game, Pierce Bailey notched his first goal of the game on an extra man opportunity, making the score in favor of the Gophers 5-3. Shortly after, Matt Woodson would score to up the lead to 6-3. But the Cardinals would not go away as they would score two quick goals to make the score 6-5.
With the last 30 seconds on the clock, Catholic dodged towards the goal and took a dangerous shot on Goucher goalkeeper Matt Messerle, while the Catholic defender falls into the crease. Messerle made his 17th save of the day but there was a pause in play before the referee made a call on whether the Cardinal offensive player fell into the crease or was pushed. Once the referee made the call, the Goucher bench and fans went wild as Goucher got the ball because of a crease violation and from there the Gophers were able to run out the clock. Matt Messerle ended the game with 17 saves on the day and no doubt was the player of the game.
The next game for Goucher Men’s Lacrosse is on Saturday, April 21 at Drew University.
